Hello...it’s your bird?
On the 4th Day of Christmas my true love gave to me (or sent to me?) Four “calling” birds....
Well that makes10 birds for Christmas so far. Now you can think what you want about life in the 80’s shoulder pads, Wham, and a few left over Village People songs?). No not those 80’s the 1780’s but giving people birds still seems a bit odd doesn’t it and 10 in 4 days? You maybe start thinking. About throwing in giving folks another tree and several copies of the New York Times...these birds are going to be messy.
On the other hand all these birds might make your flat sound like Spring which is a gift of sorts if you are in the grasp of a wicked winter, you don’t have Netflix and your heat comes from a few logs and a couple of lumps of coal.
Anyway..let’s look at the bird situation... what is a calling bird and without 5G and unlimited minutes what kind of calling can these birds really do? Well...well as it happens with lots of songs we have managed to get the lyrics wrong...you know like those lyrics in the song blinded by the light... which are really raved out like a deuce not wrapped up like a ....another roamer or runner in the night. The original chant/song lyrics say “coldly” birds. Coldly is another word for black. So they could be small black birds or maybe crows...but who’s counting? So maybe there’s not a lot of calling going on. Some literary scholars have claimed that there is a religious interpretation to this song and the four birds represent the Gospels of Matthew Mark Luke and John however, it’s just as likely that it was foreshadowing. John, Paul, George, and Ringo?
The seeking peace and joy point is this... it’s pretty easy sometimes to walk the same path not seeking anything. We take for granted things have always been how they are now and will always or are always. Supposed to be. The way they are now. Well that sort of box we create for ourselves limits what we can experience and what meanings we can make of these actual experiences. When we find out something we believed. To be is not really whaat we believed can we overcome the fear of losing our control and reinterpret our present? Will you still sing “calling” birds or will you get the words right? You could just throw in blackbird after all those Beatles did ok singing about (colly) bird sort of things. Maybe seeking peace and joy has to do with experiencing actual reality and letting the meaning of things shift when appropriate or at least let the meanings be tested and confirmed frequently? Joy can come from all the testing and reinforcement of ideas can bring and the process of being brave through fear is a terribly beautiful human experience and triumphant and joyful if we stop to reflect upon it with gratitude for having an interesting life.
In short, be glad that it is not calling birds anymore. Smile at the thought of a new mystery...why would you send or get four blackbirds? If six people gave you four you would have 4 and 20 of them to bake in a pie... anybody had a blackbird pie lately...anybody graving one? Oh well nursery rhymes are a whole different topic... however, don’t even think about. Rocking a baby at the tree top..besides you won’t have room for a baby in your tree with all these birds you’ve got to house after Christmas. For now... just give living with new knowledge. From time to time a try... there just might.be some peace and joy to give and receive from that perspective.
Tomorrow? We move beyond the chicken scratch...we’re talking gold baby gold...
